How to Plan Your Website Content in 3 Simple Steps

Planning and writing content for your website can be one of the most challenging aspects of getting your business online. You might wonder: What should you write? How many pages do you need? Which pages are essential? Beyond just sounding nice, your website content needs to be strategic. let’s tackle this together.

Your website content should:

  • Welcome visitors

  • Help them understand what you do and how you can help

  • Encourage them to buy your products or hire your services

Step 1: Define Your Goals

To make your content strategic, start with the end in mind. Define the top three goals for your website. What do you hope to achieve?

Common goals include:

  • Acquiring new clients or selling products

  • Building an audience or growing an email list

Step 2: Determine Ideal Client Actions

Once you’ve defined your goals, figure out how to meet them. Ask yourself: What actions do my ideal clients need to take to achieve each goal?

For example:

  • To get more clients, your ideal client might need to book a consultation or fill out an application form.

  • To build your email list, they need to sign up for your newsletter.

Step 3: Create the Ideal Environment

Now, determine how to create an environment that encourages your ideal clients to take those actions.

Consider:

  • What does my potential client need to know to take that action?

  • How can I help them feel comfortable and confident in taking that action?

At this step, you'll identify the content your website needs. For instance, to encourage clients to book consultations (helping you achieve your goal of gaining more clients), they need to know, like, and trust you.

To accomplish this, you’ll need:

  • A Homepage that clearly states what you do and who you work with

  • An About page that shares your story and helps potential clients relate to you

  • A Services page that explains your packages and illustrates what it’s like to work with you

  • An application form or calendar for potential clients to book a consultation

  • Optional but ideal: A blog that demonstrates your expertise and builds trust

Step Into Your Ideal Client’s Shoes

Consider your ideal client’s journey from the moment they land on your website to when they fill out your application form. This exercise will clarify what your website needs and how to give your clients the best possible experience.
